POLISH CULTURAL AUTUMN IN WASHINGTON DC - 2002

October 2: (Georgetown University) Performance and lecture on contemporary Polish poetry by Georgia Scott an American writer and professor at Gdansk University in Poland.

October 3-4: (Polish Embassy) Concerts of music by Szymanowski and Wieniawski organized in cooperation with Embassy Series.

October 10: (Polish Embassy) Ceremony of presenting the Cavalier Cross of Merit of the Republic of Poland to members of the Polish Library in Washington DC.

October 15: (Kennedy Center, Terrace Theatre) Recital of Piotr Anderszewski. Performance organized within the WPAS (Washington Performing Arts Society) Piano Series.

October 18: (Georgetown University) Adam Mickiewicz: A Romantic Portrait of a Poet - lecture by Anna Frajlich- Zając, a professor at Columbia University in New York. The event was organized in cooperation with the Slavic Department of Georgetown University.

October 18: (Polish Consulate) Poetry reading by Anna Frajlich Zając, introduced by the Voice of America journalist , Jarosław Anders.

October 24: (Polish Embassy) Concert of classical and contemporary music, given by Wiesława (violin) and Hubert (piano) Szymczyński.

October 30: (Slovak Embassy) Central Europe: Enemies, Neighbors, Friends promotion of the book written by Lonnie R. Johnson, organized in cooperation with the Czech, Slovak and Hungarian embassies.

November 3: (Blues Alley, Washington DC) Tomasz Stanko Quartet.

November 6: (Polish Embassy) Lecture on Polish-American musical connections, enriched by the music performed by two sopranos: Laura Kafka and Christine Kavanaugh Miller in cooperation with the Washingtonian Summer Opera.

November 7: (Polish Embassy) Official presentation by The Piłsudski Institute of Tadeusz Styka’ s portrait of prince Kazimierz Lubomirski – the first Polish envoy to the USA.

November 12:(Polish Embassy) Multiethnic, Multireligious Heritage of Polish Borderlands. Panel discussion organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in cooperation with the American Association for Polish-Jewish Studies. Panelists: Anne Applebaum, Zbigniew Brzeziński, Krzysztof Czyżewski, Jacek M.Nowakowski, Antony Polonski.

November 20: (Polish Embassy) Third Annual Jan Karski Award for Moral Courage - presented by the Foundation for Moral Courage. Guests of honor: Dympha Jessich (sister of the late Father Michal Judge), Jules and Gedeon Naudet (filmmakers).

November 21: (Polish Embassy) Between Poles & Jews- Developing Connections- workshop on Polish – Jewish dialogue organized by PAJA (Polish American Jewish Alliance for Youth Action)

November 21-24:(Pittsburgh) Annual conference of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies (AAASS)

December 5:(Polish Embassy) Polish Music and new technologies – concert and lecture by Jerzy Sapieyewski (professor at the American University).

December 6-7: ( Washington DC theatre at the Jewish Community Center) Zemsta - a new production by Andrzej Wajda.

December 10: (US Holocaust Memorial Museum and Polish Embassy) Ceremony dedicated to people of the Żegota - the Relief Council for Jews in Poland 1942-45”.

December 12: (AMC Mazza Gallerie) Washington premiere of “The Pianist” by Roman Polanski and a meeting with Adrien Brody - in cooperation with Focus Features.

December 19, 22, 25: (Airs on WETA TV) A Thousand years of Music and Spirit”. Set against the backdrop of Krakow amid Poland’s rich spiritual diversity, the classical concert of Polish repertoire performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir, led by orld-renowned conductor Gilbert Levine.
