May 5-14th, 2005 the exhibition “Poland on the Front Page
1979-1989” was shown for the first time in the USA at the National Press Club in
Washington D.C. The exhibition presented panels of the first pages of The New York
Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal form the time when Solidarity
movement was established and the process of democratic changes in Poland took place. For
comparison first pages of major Polish newspapers from the same period were also
presented. A separate panel featured the Solidarity underground press of the decade. It
was prepared by Shana Penn, an author of a new book: "Solidarity Secret: The Women
Who Defeated Communism in Poland."
The exhibition and opening reception was organized by the Polish Embassy in Washington
D.C. and the International Committee on Journalism. Many distinguished guests, including
Congressmen, journalists, authors of the articles presented at the event and hundreds of
people had the opportunity to be reacquainted with the Polish history. This exhibit in
2005 has a special meaning. It marks anniversaries of historic events that shaped
contemporary Europe: the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, the 25th anniversary
of the birth of the Solidarity movement, and the 15th anniversary of the end of the Cold
War.
