President Aleksander Kwaśniewski and President George W.Bush met for the third time at the White House

Poland and the United States – the Road
To Be Taken

President Aleksander Kwaśniewski has met with President George W. Bush at the Oval Office thrice during the last 18 months. Such frequent meetings mean that Poland and the United States have established a de facto strategic dialogue. It is the first time in the course of Poland’s history that my country has a superpower at its ally, which can be counted upon. Poland is perceived in America as a trusted friend with practical input. Our relations are rich, multidimensional but Polish expectations are growing. In particular Poland wants to create an even more solid social base for an enduring and strong friendship. The United States understands and values the importance of our stance and because of that increases military assistance and declares its intention to ease the requirements for Poles traveling to America. Both governments have created a High-Level Working Group which will work out proper solutions in this realm. Poland believes that despite the implementation of the significant improvements in the visa system, which is a task yet to be accomplished, there is also a need for visa policy for Poland in general to follow the improving quality of our bilateral relations. There should be no question whether Poland will be part of the visa waiver program but rather when this happens. As a famous Latin saying goes: bis dat qui cito dat…who bestows quickly, bestows twice…
