Back in Europe “We are returning to the great European family. We are returning to the place which Poles and Poland deserve in 1,000 years of history” – said President Aleksander Kwaśniewski after Polish voters overwhelmingly approved entry into the European Union in a referendum. On this June evening residents of Polish towns filled the streets to celebrate the great historic moment. Turnout reached 58.85 percent, 77.45 percent of voters backed accession to the European Union and 22.55 percent voted no. Poles living in the United States also had an opportunity to express their opinion. 14636 voters took part in the vote, 9992 said yes and 4508 said no. More than ninety percent of voters who came to cast their vote at the Embassy in Washington chose European future for Poland. By joining now the European Union and several years earlier NATO, Poland crowned her path of a great comeback to the Western World. |
