On Sunday, April 10, 2011, the National Katyn Memorial Foundation held a ceremony to commemorate the 71st anniversary of the massacre of more than 21,000 Polish officers, soldiers and civilians by the NKVD in 1940. The ceremony also honored a second tragic anniversary - the April 2010 plane crash in Smolensk, Russia that resulted in the deaths of 96 Poles, including Poland's President Lech Kaczynski.

Sunday, April 10, 2011 marks the 1-year anniversary of a tragic plane crash near Smolensk, Russia that resulted in the deaths of Poland's President, Lech Kaczynski, First Lady Maria Kaczynska and 94 other Polish military, civic and religious leaders. The delegation was en route to a ceremony in Katyn Forest honoring the victims of the 1940 Katyn massacre. Poles and friends of Poland around the world are commemorating the victims of the Smolensk tragedy. President Barack Obama issued a statement honoring the victims' memory.
